Something to think about..
"As the MPCA sifts through all of the information gathered,
the potential impact of enforcing a 10 mg/L standard could be financially
catastrophic, not just for private industries like mining companies but for
municipalities across the state.
Right here in Ely, the city water treatment plant would likely
have to throw millions of dollars at finding a way to lower sulfate levels to
10 mg/L. The latest test results show Ely's discharge water at more than three
times the wild rice standard."

The permit application is subject to public review and comment for 90
days. A public hearing is scheduled in Duluth Jan. 16, 2014, that will
coincide with a public hearing for the NorthMet supplemental draft
Environmental Impact Statement.

Northshore Mining idled two production lines in 2013, which meant layoffs for dozens of people.
